Job Description

Lead complex transportation construction projects from the field.

At HR Green, our mission is simple: Building Communities. Improving Lives.

For more than 110 years, we've partnered with municipalities, transportation agencies, and public-sector clients to deliver infrastructure solutions that strengthen communities and improve quality of life. We're proud to be consistently ranked on Engineering News-Record's Top 500 Design Firms list and recognized as a Great Place to Work.

We're seeking an experienced Construction Technician III to help lead large, complex transportation construction projects. This senior field-focused role is ideal for someone who can interpret plans and specifications, solve challenging construction issues, represent the client's interests, and make sound decisions when field conditions don't match the plan.

You'll work closely with clients, contractors, subconsultants, agencies, and the public while helping keep projects moving safely, efficiently, and in accordance with contract requirements.

What You'll Do

You'll provide hands-on construction oversight, quality assurance, technical problem-solving, and client support on major transportation projects.

Construction Management & Field Leadership

• Manage and support the execution and quality assurance of large, complex transportation construction projects.

• Interpret local, state, and federal specifications, procedures, plans, and contract documents and apply them to actual field conditions.

• Respond to contractor questions, resolve field issues, and recommend adjustments when plans, materials, or site conditions require them.

• Lead progress meetings and participate in city board or stakeholder meetings.

• Coordinate and supervise subconsultants, monitor scope performance, and review invoices for payment.

Technical Problem-Solving & Quality Assurance

• Identify causes of construction defects or nonconforming work related to design, materials, installation, or site conditions and recommend solutions.

• Address complex issues involving structural elements, mass earthwork, roadway geometry, closures, substitute materials, and utility relocations.

• Perform quality assurance checks and advise contractors on corrective action when work or materials do not meet requirements.

• Perform constructability reviews and recommend improvements to outdated, generic, or non-buildable design elements.

• Evaluate contractor alternatives and value-engineering ideas that may improve constructability, schedule, safety, cost, or long-term performance.

Client Representation & Project Controls

• Represent the client in resolving schedule, plan, cost, and contract-related challenges.

• Anticipate out-of-scope work and advise stakeholders on approaches that can reduce risk, improve safety, accelerate delivery, or control cost.

• Assist with pay estimates, pay-item quantities, quality-control interpretation, and contractor accounting disputes.

• Recommend withholding payment for work that does not conform to plans or specifications when appropriate.

• Process RFIs and change orders and maintain accurate field notes, measurements, reports, project files, and audit-ready records.

Inspection, Documentation & Stakeholder Coordination

• Observe and document construction activities for conformance with plans, specifications, contract documents, and regulatory requirements.

• Perform yield checks, depth checks, utility testing, and basic construction layout, including bench circuits and line-and-grade support.

• Build productive relationships with agencies, residents, business owners, employees, and community stakeholders.

• Respond quickly to complex field situations and make timely decisions using independent judgment.

What You Bring

You're an experienced construction professional who is comfortable taking ownership in the field, navigating complex contract requirements, and working directly with clients and contractors to keep major infrastructure projects on track.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

• 8+ years of construction project management experience, including supervisory experience and work with moderately complex construction plans.

• DOT and/or toll road construction experience.

• Understanding of complex construction issues, including structural work, mass earthwork, and roadway geometry.

• Working knowledge of basic surveying, including horizontal and vertical control.

• Knowledge of construction materials, terminology, and design concepts.

• Excellent communication, time-management, conflict-resolution, and technical skills.

• Training on equipment commonly used for engineering-related testing and analysis.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

• Degree in Construction Management.

• Experience on transportation and/or water construction projects exceeding $5 million.

• Previous supervisory or management experience.

• Strong familiarity with construction documentation requirements and inspection procedures.

• Use your experience to solve complex field challenges and influence project outcomes.

• Help protect quality, schedule, budget, safety, and the client's interests throughout construction.

• Continue growing your career within a collaborative, employee-owned engineering and consulting firm.
