This is an entry level position that provides training for construction management work involving inspection of a wide variety of public works, utilities, and building construction projects. Employees in this class will be trained in the inspection of technical road, storm water drainage, and utility projects. Development of the incumbent's knowledge of road, building, bridge, and seawall design and construction, water distribution and backflow prevention, sewer transmission, and related projects and procedures will be provided.

Work Schedule: 8 week commitment, 20 hours a week

What Would You Do?

  • Training in the inspection of complex road construction, checking of plans for proposed construction, conferring with contractors to ensure county standards are met, and completing written reports.

  • Work with inspection staff to assist contractors in interpreting county plans and specifications, check layout and grades of structures or materials, scheduling tests by approved laboratories, make progress reports and update plans to show field changes reflecting final as-builts.

  • Learn to review site plans with contractors prior to construction and inspect work for compliance with approved plans, specifications, and requirements.

  • Train to inspect water and sewer construction projects, check and verify that vertical and horizontal controls conform to construction plans and inspect to ensure construction practices and workmanship meet county requirements and utility system specifications.

  • Learn to act as a liaison between County stakeholders and contractors for construction projects, review plans and specifications to ensure accuracy in construction and take samples of construction materials for laboratory tests.

  • Train to conduct periodic inspection of dredge or fill projects and investigate and report on violations of regulations pertaining to dredge and fill activities.

  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

What Do You Need To Have?
    • Be at least 18 years of age or older able to speak, write, and comprehend the English language.
    • Enrolled in college/university program related to Construction or Class of 2025 High School Diploma or equivalent
    • Required to wear collared shirt, work pants and work boots. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)will be provided.

Highly Desirable
  • Familiarity with construction principles
